Report Scheduler report overlaps, system services interrupting reports, mail server issues

Q: Reports (eg Product Sales Report YTD & Product Sales Report – Specialist) are showing as processing. Are these stuck? If so how can they be stopped?

A:  If the status is “Processing” then it means this report has been flagged as being started and will be marked as completed once the report has been generated. If the session dies, the server restarts, etc… then the report will not be marked as completed. Whenever the report scheduler is initiated it will review this list and grab the first report which is due/over due. If it finds a report marked as “Processing” it will skip over it unless it was initiated more than 2hrs ago. In this case it considers the report as failing and will then attempt the report again setting the status to “Processing (2x)”. The system will attempt to run this report up to 3x maximum.

Q: One of my reports didn't run, and the other has been running for 2 hours.

A:  If there is a lot of data a report may take a long time to run and may overlap the next report start time, thus preventing the next report from starting. Also if a data check or a system reboot or other system service starts at the same time the scheduled reports may not be run. In such circumstances the job will be kicked out and not be started again until the scheduler fires up again.

3. I can see with some reports that are getting stuck that these looked to be running up until a certain time without an error, then stop running properly eg when they get to 5mb.

A: The java emailer may be failing due to the size, you may get an error from their mail server. Check whether there is a size limit on the SMTP mail size (which they said no), there are 2 reports that look to have done the same thing and they both stopped when they got to 5mb. Some very large reports or multiples of reports could be consuming 15mb every time this report is run.
